Our largest and most powerful trencher is now a reality!
Announced in the run-up to Bauma 2022, the Mastenbroek 160/18 is virtually twice the size and weight of our previous largest machine, the 70/45.
Designed for soil mixing at depths of up to 18 metres (60 feet) and de-watering to nine metres (30 feet), the 160/18 has been bought by L4H Trenching in Longmont, Colorado.
The 120-tonne modular machine left the UK at the beginning of April and arrived at its new home this week.
In addition to its weight and innovative transport mode—being split into three units, all below 53 tonnes and narrower than 3.6 metres—the 160/18 is the first Mastenbroek machine to be powered by two 16-litre, US tier 4 final / EU stage five compliant Volvo Penta TWD1683VE engines.
One-pass trenching specialists L4H Trenching have been at the forefront of deep collection trenching since 2003, working across a wide range of industries and applications.
Mastenbroek has designed the 160/18 to suit the needs of a wide range of projects, from constructing cut-off walls controlling ground water movement and pollution containment, to improving compressible soils beneath loaded areas such as storage areas or road and railway embankments.
“The 160/18 has been designed to L4H Trenching’s exact needs. In developing such a large and powerful machine, our design engineers have had to overcome many significant challenges, but they’ve done it,” says Christopher Pett, Mastenbroek’s commercial director. “Synchronising two engines, developing a revolutionary digging mechanism and creating a modular design for easy transportation and fork-lift assembly were just some of the areas in which our design team excelled. We’re very proud of the 160/18 and cannot wait to see it in action!”
